Blog Post #1- Communication

Hello fellow readers. This is my first ever blog post and today I’m going to blog about Communication!

Communication is the means of conveying a meaningful message to another party. We communicate constantly with each and another every day. And strange it may seem, we are constantly having a conversation with ourselves whether you're aware of it or not. For example, we tend to ask ourselves, ‘Should I wear red or blue today?’

Using right means and mode of communication is most crucial in our message. One would agree that action speaks louder than words. The best example would be watching Mr Bean. He makes everyone laugh without saying a single word. Our tone, facial expressions and many other factors play a huge part in what we are going to convey to the other party.

I have worked with teams before and have gone through bitter times due to poor inter-personal communication skills. I would like to share an unforgettable experience of working in a team during my JC days. I was working in a group of 4 and was doing a subject called project work. Due to a difference in expectations, I was at times sarcastically insulting my friends’ work without realising it. Eventually, I decided to dump all of the work on myself thus burning midnight oils daily which in turn affected my health badly.

I did not complete JC due to my health status. I started reflecting my mistakes and realised that I was lacking in communicating my feelings out in a sensitive way. I was not willing to listen and only wanted my point across. Friendships and feelings were affected. Learning from these mistakes, I changed myself to be able to listen more and always thought before I spoke.

Right now, I’m having my first group project in NUS. I would say that things are going pretty well. We have similar expectations. We laid out our strengths and weaknesses in the first meeting and discussed on when we are able to meet up. Though we had some minor disputes in the first few meetings about the flow of events, we sorted it out within a few minutes. We heard each other’s views on the flow and decided on one that would work best.

We have just finished our first OP and I would say we did a fairly well done job despite a few hiccups. Due to our commitments, we could only rehearse a day before. Unfortunately, one of our teammates told us a day before that she would not able to make it down for the rehearsal as she was not feeling well. She did reassure us that she will do the rehearsal at home and ensure that the time limit is hit. My perception of her turned from uncertainty to trustworthiness. I believe that we are on the right track in achieving our goals!

Also on communication, I would like to share some personal experiences on intercultural communication with you. During my year 3 in poly, I decided to apply for an overseas internship program in China. I was working with Hewlett Packard for 3 months. Whenever I tell my friends about this, they will immediately give me a shocked look and ask the golden question. How could I, an Indian, communicate with people in China?

Well fortunately, my colleagues were able to speak simple English. Some were not so well versed thus; sentences like “I was excited” should be said as “I was happy”. The biggest challenge in China was to do some shopping on my own. I recall an incident where I wanted an exercise mat for myself. I tried to converse in broken Chinese with the sales assistant. However, my message did not go through. Soon, I started describing the item that I wanted with my hands and body. I used my hands to describe the length of the mat and my body to do some exercise poses. Eventually, she understood me and guided me to the correct section. This can clearly show that communication is not just about words. Actions play a vital role in such cases.

Thus these can show that communications is crucial in depicting the person you are on how you take the message and how you convey it out. Remember that in communication, be sensitive to one another. Cheers!

  1. After reading your blog, I should say that I can really feel your pain as well as experience it when what you want to express cannot be understood by others. Language is like a bridge which connects people's thoughts and idea. But, how this bridge can be constructed is depended on the both sides of the speaker and listener. If we try our best to find a way, eventually we can make people understand us.Through this process, we gain experiences. Maybe, next time you come to China, you will find it more easy to communicate with people around.

Through your blog, I also know a brief history and experience of you. You are so hardworking and energetic and I am quite happy we have the same expectation. Thanks to your constructive suggestions during the OP rehearse, we made an excellent team work in the OP.I am also impressed by your presentation skills. I hope I can learn some from you in the following meetings.

To be one of your very first NUS project group team mates, I also feel the honor and pressure. I think we have the opportunity to be the best team in both CS2101 and CS2103T. Best wishes~

  2. Hi Sathish, just to let you know, I have went through those pains you mentioned. My first experience of being a leader for a project was during my polytechnic days. My team of 5 was designing and programming a website for 2 months. I did quite a bad job assigning the tasks because I did not bother to understand my team mates. Hence many tasks were badly done as it was based on my narrow perspective. I feel that my team members were not serious enough and have not been doing a good job thus I ended up taking all the work. By the end of the project, I have did badly for my own work as well as my team mates'. My lecturer could tell that my team was doing quite badly and hence we scored quite bad grades for that assignment. I also have poor interpersonal skills and like what you have done, I ended up insulting all my team mates. Sadly, I only know of all these mistakes I have made after the project has ended. Most importantly, I should have try to understand my team mates and not assume that they have the same capability as me. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, in a team, everyone should try to cover up for each other's weaknesses.

Also, sometimes when I talk to my friends and lecturers, I seem quite arrogant because of the tone of my voice and my choice of words. I only realized this when people start avoiding me. So if this happens, please tell me about it else I wouldn't realise it.

Through all these experiences, I realized that a true friend is someone who is honest with you. They will dare to tell you that "you suck" when you really do. But they will also be there to help you get through it.

I feel that you are a straightforward person and that may not be a bad thing. The feedbacks you have given to the team to help us improve are quite constructive. Also, the way you deliver your feedbacks is quite good in the sense that it does not offend others. From that, I can see that you have learnt the mistakes and improved much based on your past experiences. Looks like I can learn a lot from you in order to speak more sensitively and positively!

See you in our next meeting!

  3. Thank you for always sharing your experiences with us. They are relevant and add to our learning experience considerably.

I can relate to your particular experience of doing most of the work for a group project yourself. I used to do that all the time when I was younger; rejecting the help my team mates offered. Similarly, the work load took a toll on my health – I am currently on lifetime medication. More importantly, I realise that I haven’t take into consideration the feelings of those team mates until I read your blog post.

Anyway, from the past interactions we have had, I find it hard to believe the person you describe as insensitive and unwilling listener is actually you. This really shows how much you have progressed since then and I feel that you are a great example to anyone who wishes to improve on their interpersonal skills.

  4. Thanks for sharing your experiences with me!

And thank you Yu Kai for pointing out that i have progressed alot. I'm happy to hear that.

I feel that overall in a team, its the way that we communicate and listen that will bring make a strong bond within us.

Now that our proposal has been done up, I am actually proud to say that I have a bunch of hardworking teammates who stay up to 5am just to do a solid proposal.

    -----

Zhengyang, I believe we can help each other out here and there. I will help you out in your language when it comes to OP. I'm happy that you are actually willing to make changes along the way based on my recommendations for your script. Let us all do a solid presentation for the upcoming OP2 !!
